Blogging is a great form of self-expression. It’s a perfect way to release your creativity and share your ideas to the world. To some, blogging is not just a medium to express themselves but an outlet to relieve stress and be in touch with their inner self.
You don’t have to be a writer to begin your own blog. In fact, just about anyone can start a blog. Check out these simple steps in creating your own blog.
- Come up with a concept
The first thing you should do before creating your own blog is to know what to blog about. It should be something you’re passionate about, so it will be easier to get your creative juices flowing. Picking a topic you’re passionate about also helps you create a niche that will make your blog stand out.
Do you want to blog to help like-minded people? You can create a blog about animals, finances, gardening, or food to give information to those who love their pets or those who want to take charge of their money, or are thinking of planting their own vegetable garden, or those who want to create culinary masterpieces.
Do want to entertain people? You can create a blog that focuses on celebrities, movies, or gaming. Do wish to be popular and make some money? You can start a blog to get your stories published.
When you have a topic you’re passionate to write about, it will be easier to update and keep your blog fresh with new information.
- Pick out a blogging platform
WordPress easily stands out as a preferred blogging platform among blog enthusiasts, thanks to its myriad of plugins and add-ons that help you design and layout your blog in so many ways. Plus, it’s free. You can also choose other popular platforms like Tumblr and Blogger.
- Choose a hosted or non-hosted blogging platform
Simply put, you need to determine if you want to pay for your blog or go for a platform that’s free. If you’re just doing this for fun, you can opt for a free blog (WordPress, Blogger, and Tumblr all offer free hosted platforms), but this offers a lot of limitations. For one, you don’t have your own domain name (if it’s hosted on WordPress, your blog will look like this: myblog.wordpress.com), you can’t make money out of it, and you have limited upload capacities for your images and videos. Essentially, you don’t own your blog as it is hosted on someone else’s website.
A self-hosted blog, on the other hand, is your own blog with your own domain name. For a fee, you can come up with whatever blog names you fancy and upload unlimited number of images, videos and content on a self-hosted blog. Plus, you can take advantage of free themes to easily personalize your blog.
- Name and design your blog
Once you decided on the blogging platform, it’s time to generate some names for your blog. Make sure that the name of your blog is closely related to the topic you want to write about. You also have to research keywords associated with your subject, so that people can easily find your blog.
Then, you have to design your blog to reflect your topic. WordPress, Blogger, and Tumblr all offer a wide range of themes you can choose from. If you’re creating a blog for business, for example, you may want a theme that looks professional and easy on the eyes, so your readers can easily navigate your blog.
- Blog away
Once you’ve set up your blog, you can now write your first post. Just click on the “New Post” tab and start writing your title and the body of your first blog post. If you want, you can add photos or videos to make your post more attractive. Once you’re done writing, just click “Publish” and your first post is now ready to be viewed by readers.
