The important thing, though, is to get your groove back and turn that terrible day around.

Don’t let a bad mood eat up all your energy and turn you into a beast that everyone avoids. Here are simple ways to bust your bad mood and instantly brighten up your lousy day.

  1. Listen to music

During those bleak days, an instant pick-me-up will help you break a bad mood. Listening to soothing music helps minimize those negative feelings that you are having. Studies show that listening to classical music helps lower blood pressure as well as reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

If you’re not fond of listening to soothing pieces, you can choose whatever type of music that can get you in a better mood. Even sad, depressing music that matches your mood can do the trick for as long as it makes you feel good. When you feel much better, you can then opt for much more upbeat tunes that will lift your spirits.

  1. Eat seafood

Raise your docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels with omega-3 fatty acids found in seafood. Studies show that high DHA levels are associated with raised levels of dopamine and serotonin, which are the brain chemicals that most antidepressants boost. Eat salmon or mackerel at least twice a week to boost your mood and reduce your anxiety.

Sometimes all it takes to shake off a bad mood is to be one with nature. Surrounding yourself with beautiful plants and flowers is a great way to lift your spirits. Research shows that being amidst forest environments helps reduce cortisol levels while lowering blood pressure. So when you feel so down and out, just take a walk outside and marvel at the beauty of nature.

  1. Turn your attention to something else

Watch a TV show or movie, read a book, do some crossword puzzles, exercise – do anything that will distract you and keep you from overthinking things. Keeping yourself distracted is a great way to calm yourself down and give you that much-needed time to process everything that’s going on in your life. It will help reorganize your thoughts and shift your focus on things that will lift your mood.
